Thermochromic Inks

Heat-changing, also known as thermochromic inks, in which the print changes from the warmth of the hand, from a hot drink poured into a glass, or from the cold of the fridge. It appears, disappears or changes color. After the thermal effect has ceased, they return their original state.

Description

Temperature-changing, also known as thermochromic inks, in which the color of the print changes reversibly.

Warm-changing thermochromic inks change from colored to colorless or to another lighter color when the temperature is raised to the transition temperature range. When it cools down, the ink returns to its original color.

Cold-changing thermochromic inks change from colorless to colored when the temperature cools to the transition temperature range. When heated, the ink also returns to its original color.

The recommended inks for this purpose can be ordered in a variety of colors and in both water-based and UV-curable versions.

Effects available in various temperature ranges. For example, a Black layer "disappears" and becomes transparent when we put our hands on it, or rub the surface.

Or the other way around, when the label of the drink placed in the fridge shows that it is just right for consumption as the temperature drops (for example at 7 °C).

Change the color between "normal" and fluo colors is also possible.

Common applications
  • Security documents
  • Promotional gifts
  • Advertising surfaces
  • Temperature labels
  • Packaging
  • Learning tools, etc.
Activation temperature ranges

The transition of heat-changing inks from colored to transparent takes place in the range of 3 to 10 °C compared to the type temperature. Therefore, temperature change only works well for general cues like cold, warm, or hot, and not for exact temperature values.

Varying inks can be supplied in the following temperature ranges

Lightfastness

Long-term UV radiation can worsen the intensity of the colors. The lightfastness of thermochromic inks is 1 – 2 on the Blue Wool scale, similar to the lightfastness of fluorescent inks. Due this, thermochromic inks are not recommended for long-term outdoor applications.

How can you use it?

Printing and drying

Due to the low opacity, Sebutherm inks need to be printed between 47 and 77 # mesh. But the finer meshes can also be used if there is no need to cover.

It can be applied with a coarser mesh, such as 47#, in one or with a finer mesh (eg, 77#) in several layers for adequate coverage.

The coverage of thermochromic inks is directly related to the color and the thickness of the printed layer.

Usage and security

Substrates: These inks can be used well on the surface of most coated and absorbent materials, as well as certain plastics. The compatibility of the ink and the substrate must always be checked before starting work.

Special attention and care must be taken when drying thick layers. If drying or adhesion is inadequate, the thick layer may break, crack or fall off the substrate.

The UV-curable Sebutherm inks are not suitable for printing on toys or food packaging.

Due to the many combinations of colors and temperatures, it is not possible to keep all raw materials in stock. Consequently, the delivery time of some orders can be up to 3-4 weeks.

There are many variables with these products. For example, water-based / UV-curable inks. Also, effects that disappear, become visible, change from color to color at different temperature values. Therefore, please contact us and we will provide you with the exact product for your application.
